Sight Seeing: Comparing AK Irons

This post features content originally from our December 30th, 2023 newsletter; we didn't want the information to be lost to the void so we're backing it up here for those who didn't get to see it the first time around.
Most people would agree that the AK's standard irons leave much to be desired and while the easiest answer would typically be to just stick an RDS or other optic on the gun, some people might want to maintain the classic look or want a better back up sight in case the optic goes down. Below we're comparing two different styles of sights, standard leaf sights & rail mounted back up sights.
The standard rear sight has a noticeably narrow rear sight notch that's unforgiving when aligning the sights, especially at speed. Our Enhanced Rear Sight was designed to remedy this issue and optimized for CQB ranges by featuring a wider square notch and rounded edges to better draw your eyes to the center
These next two sights are designed more as back up sights for optics rails that end up removing or replacing the standard rear sight:
First up is the Occam Defense Solutions PH2 Sights (shown here as a back up sight co-witnessing with an Aimpoint T2), featuring 4 different apeture sizes for the rear and an AR15's front sight blade. Because of this you can replace the front sight blade out with a thinner or a tritium illuminated front sight if you're into that kind of thing. While designed for ODS's MERC and our Mk.II & Quickhatch rails we developed with them, they're not exclusive to the system and can be mounted to almost any firearm with a sight rail.
The Texas Weapons Systems Basic Rear Peep Sight is exactly what it says on the tin. It's a back up rear sight for use with their G3 Dog Leg Optic Mount and maintains the use of the existing front sight. While this lacks any adjustment beyond what the front sight post offers, it's lightweight and compact so it stays out of the way until you need it.
